Palkan is one of the twenty three prosperous barangays in the northern part of the municipality of Polomolok, South Cotabato. It is bordered on the north by Barangay Kinilis, on the south by Barangay Sulit, on the west by municipality of Tupi and on the east by Barangay Lam Caliaf. It has a total land area of 339.97 square kilometers or 131.3 sqare miles. It has a population of 3067 as of 2007 census of Polomolok (www.google.com).
This place is splendidly gifted with pineapple plantation products and processing, livestock resources (cattle, swine production, meat packaging) furniture, asparagus and cut flowers, cotton ginnery, corn, vegetable and fruits. But they proudly present their bountiful treasure which is the bamboo plants that are found in temperate land in abundance. Bamboo production is one of their main sources of livelihood.
The place is surrounded by houses which are made of bamboos. The roads are very wide, allowing large vehicles like buses to pass through. Commercial establishments on the place is only few and most of it is restaurant.
One of the main sources of livelihood in Palkan is the bamboo crafts and furniture making. Every families are helping each other to finish the job in a small period of time. The head of the family will lead the making of bamboo crafts while while his children help him. With this, they can bond with each other while earning a living. The wives will just stay on their homes to do household chores and prepare a food for her family.
Because of the abundance of bamboo and the hardworking attitudes of people living their in Palkan I hope that someday it will be one of the world’s famous and biggest bamboo production.
